Vicarious Substitution

Vicarious substitution is also known as vicarious nucleophilic substitution (VNS). This substitution is a special type of nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a hydrogen atom in an aromatic ring in the presence of a leaving group that is not directly replaced by the nucleophile.
This substitution mechanism is useful for introducing substituents at that positions in an aromatic ring when direct substitution is difficult or impossible due to steric or electronic factors.
